There are a number of questions in the Census that help governments understand Australia’s population and make informed decisions about funding, services, and future planning.
One question in particular that asks people about their religion also contributes to decisions affecting areas such as education, aged care, community services, mental health support, cultural programs and even Christian media! The question is “What is your religion?” Every Census helps build a picture of Australia who we are, the communities that shape us, and how we live, learn, care, and belong.
While it may seem like just another question, it’s an opportunity to accurately reflect an important part of your story. For some people, Christianity is a deeply held personal faith. For others, it’s the values they were raised with, the traditions they continue to embrace, or the connection they have through Christian schools, churches, charities, media, and community organisations that have shaped their lives.
The religion question isn’t about measuring how often you attend church or making a political statement. It’s simply an opportunity to answer truthfully about an aspect of your identity. Every response contributes to a broader picture of Australia’s communities. Census data helps inform understanding of our nation’s diversity and the role different communities play across the country.
As you complete your Census this August, take a moment to consider your story. If Christianity is part of your story, whether through your faith, values, upbringing, or community consider reflecting that honestly in your response.
