Thinking of Getting Therapy? Here’s 4 Reasons to Act Now

By: Rinet Van Lill

Embarking on life’s journey exposes us to a myriad of challenges and struggles that can jeopardise our well-being.

While starting therapy with a psychologist may seem like a daunting task, it is crucial to understand the potential consequences of delaying mental health care. Just like a rubber-band, the impact of not finding support can unleash a forceful snapback that leaves us feeling overwhelmed and unable to cope with life’s challenges. Here are a few of the risks associated with delaying mental health interventions.

1. Escalation of Challenges

When we choose to delay starting therapy, minor issues can quickly snowball into major problems. Similar to a rubber-band stretching further and further, our difficulties can amplify and add to the tension we experience. By addressing problems early on, we can prevent them from spiralling out of control and maintain a sense of stability.

2. Emotional and Mental Toll

Carrying the burden of unresolved concerns takes a relentless toll on our emotional and mental well-being. The accumulation of everyday stressors drains our mental energy, leaving us depleted and vulnerable. As we postpone starting therapy, the strain on our mental health intensifies. However, early intervention offers the vital support needed to alleviate these burdens and cultivate emotional resilience.

3. Impact on Relationships

Our struggles not only affect us but also have a ripple effect on our relationships with others. When we refrain from starting therapy, we may inadvertently distance ourselves from loved ones, causing tension and misunderstanding. However, by actively addressing our personal challenges, we not only demonstrate a steadfast commitment to our own growth but also to those we hold dear. This shared dedication fosters mutual understanding and paves the way for stronger and more meaningful connections with others.

4. Missed Opportunities

Delaying intervention may result in missed opportunities for personal development. The longer we put off seeking help, the more time we waste, struggling with our unresolved issues. Early intervention empowers us to overcome obstacles, learn from our experiences, and make progress towards our future goals.

Like a rubber-band that is constantly being pulled towards the end of its reach, the effects of not starting therapy can be devastating. To avoid this metaphorical snapback, it is crucial to be proactive. By seeking assistance promptly, we can prevent the escalation of challenges, preserve our mental well-being, nurture our relationships, and seize the opportunities that life presents. Remember, reaching out for help is not a sign of weakness but rather a courageous step towards growth and a brighter future.
